College and University Admissions

Getting accepted into a four-year university, whether as a high school or transfer student, is more difficult than it used to be. Although over recent years the admissions process has become more competitive, it does not have to be as daunting as it seems. When evaluating applicants, universities are interested in a few pertinent issues. First and foremost, they want to know if you are academically capable of handling the rigorous academic coursework required by their university. To evaluate academic aptitude of high school students entering university, schools use the GPA and SAT and/or ACT scores. To evaluate academic aptitude of transfer students, schools look at your GPA and academic and professional involvement.International students will need to present TOEFL scores in addition to the GPA andacademic accomplishments.

But standardized test scores are not enough; admissions committees also want to assess an applicant’s interest and commitment to higher education. This is why it is important that applicants highlight their accomplishments and achievements in and outside of the classroom. Experiences where you can develop your leadership skills, serve the community, work in teams to solve problems, and enhance your academic aptitude will enable you to grow and will bolster your application for university. Special hobbies and talents such as participation in athletic activities, music, or the arts can help set you apart as well.

CollegeApplication and Personal StatementConsultation

The primary application to universities is normally processed through individual university websites, or in some cases, a central body, which sends your application to the individual schools you choose to apply to within that portal. For example, the University of California (UC) has 9 campuses, but students need only complete one application through the UC portal, after which their application will be distributed to the UC campuses of their choice. Like the UC application system, The Common Application for Undergraduate College Admission is another resource with over 400 participating member universities who accept applications through their central portal. The application has several components including the personal information section, the academic history section, activities and awards, and most importantly the personal statement (statement of purpose). The personal statement is where applicants have the opportunity to make a convincing argument for why they should be accepted to a four-year university.

Some universities, particularly Ivy Leagues, grant applicants the opportunity to visit the university campus and meet with applications committees and professors. The interview can be a crucial component to the application process. The university interview is an opportunity for the admission committee to get to know you as a person. Many applicants view the interview as an oral examination, where the interviewer asks a series of questions, and expects you to provide the single right answer. As a result of this misconception, applicants spend hours memorizing answers to every possible question the interviewer could ask. The interview is not an oral exam! How you do on your interview depends on a number of factors. You have to provide thoughtful answers to questions, display professionalism, and leave an overall positive impression based on your verbal and non-verbal communication.
